Bazaar took a bit of an odd turn in the early 1970s, focusing more on issues and less on fashion for fashion’s sake. One of the more interesting covers of those years is this one from 1972, where we see the fashion stars of the day playing a sort of “Hollywood Squares.”
Can you name them all? Give it your best shot, and I’ll fill in the names as they are correctly given. Please, if you have this issue of Bazaar, limit yourself to only one of the really hard ones.
Row 1:
A) Bill Blass
B) Oscar de la Renta
C) Betsey Johnson
D) Geoffrey Beene
Row 2:
A) John Anthony
B) Donald Brooks
C) Anne Klein
D) Kasper
Row 3:
A) Halston
B) Pauline Trigere
C) Chester Weinberg
D) Victor Joris
Also, can anyone remember another time when a fashion magazine featured the photo of an actual fashion designer on the cover? (No, Kate Moss does NOT count!)
I can’t recall any fashion magazine featuring a fashion designer on the actual cover. And I agree, that Kate Moss, and for that matter, Victoria Beckham, certainly don’t count! The cover you’ve chosen here is fab. It’s so . . . . . . 70s!
I don’t know any of the faces unfortunately, although the lady in row 3, B looks like she could be editor of American Vogue – possibly??? Do tell!
BTW! My hair style is currently just like the smiley lady in first row – except I wear mine with a fringe.
Oh, I can’t tell! But no, 3B is a designer, not an editor.
And celebrities-turned-designers do not count for the second question
Is 3B Trigere?
It is!
Bill Blass in 1A?
Correct!
Is Row 1 B Oscar de la Renta?
Yes!
I won’t be able to name any of them, but the third from the left woman on the top row looks like she could be a current day hipster: braid plus Native American theme t-shirt.
I’m kind of surprised by how man-heavy this cover is. Looks like maybe the women still had a way to go in 1972, even in fashion.
1A – Bill Blass, 1B – Oscar de la Renta?, 1C Betsey Johnson?, 1D…feel I should know this guy, but the only name that comes to mind is Steve Parr and I’m not ‘feeling it LOL
Row 2 is a mystery, although 2D reminds me of Tiny Tim with a hair cut
3A has to be Halston, 3B Pauline Trigere?
Looking forward to seeing the answers
Yes, to 1C and to 3A
Hooray, I got one!
Going to try another – would Row 2 A be Calvin Klein? Hard to tell with that mustache.
No, I’m afraid not, but good guess!
Is 1 D Geoffrey Beene?
Very good!
Is that Betsey in row 1C? I do believe that is her. (How cute to see her sans her wild colorful hairdid.) Pauline is in 3B. It is killing me that I can’t think of who the woman in the 2nd row is. (As you can see, I only care about identifying the women designers
) Actually, I’d love to work on this, but today’s all booked with errands and chores and dinner party prep. Cool photo. Oh, and wasn’t DVF on the cover of Time wearing her ubiquitous wrap dress in the ’70s?
Yes, and yes. The DVF cover was on Newsweek, in 1976.
Oh, doin’ pretty good
This is fun! Is Row 2 D Kasper?
You are good!
Is 2A John Kloss?
Sad thing is, I “used” to know who some of these folks are, but not anymore!
Bonnie Cashion in Row 2?
If I could spell!
Bonnie Cashin.
More coffee.
This is fun Lizzie
And the lady in 2C is soooo familiar–but who? I can’t remember! Actually, all of row 2 look quite familiar, especially 2D–but not enough so’s I’d guess any but 2A, and that’s probably wrong!
What fun, Lizzie!
Not Cashin, not Kloss..
How about Thea Porter?
Sorry…
Wild guess – 2C Carol Horn?
I think 3C is Chester Weinberg (I know better what he looks like without a beard)
3D might be Gustave Tassell but he would have to be in his 50s by 1972, so maybe not.
2B Luis Estevez only because he is about the right age and would pass for Cuban…
3C is Chester Weinberg! The others are not…
Taking another stab. Could the lady to guess be Adele Simpson? If it is, she looks GREAT for her age.
No, sorry…
I’ll start giving clues later on today.
Okay, I’m stumped…. one last try at 2C – Anne Klein? She’s about the right age I think, otherwise I give up on the rest!
YEA!! Anne Klein it is.
2A John Anthony?
Yes, it is!
Is 2B Donald Brooks?
Yes, it is!
And there is only one left, and it is a tough one!
Well, I knew 2A was a John (hmmm…. sounds rather disconcerting, doesn’t it?), just couldn’t figure out which one!
Who could 3D be????
Could 3D be Vidal Sasoon?
I’m afraid not.
3D is probably the least known of all the designers in the montage. He was primarily a designer of coats and suits, and for much of his career designed under the brand name of the coat company for which he worked. Sometime in the early 70s he had his own label.
I’m not sure it is the same person, but a man by this name is a renowned dog show judge.
oh this is a toughie!
bill blass, oscar de la Renta, gloria vanderbilt, geoffrey beene
?, ralph lauren, vera maxwell, ?
Karl Lagerfeld?, edith head, ?, ?
I didn’t read the other posts yet, I promise!
You got three of them!
Okay, I’m going to go ahead and reveal the name of 3D. It is Victor Joris, who was the designer at Cuddlecoat during the 60s and early 70s. Sometime thereafter he designed under his own label.
I do think it is a bit odd that he was included, but not Calvin Klein or Giorgio di Sant’Angelo or Stephen Burrows or Bonnie Cashin or …
I’ve never heard of him! lol
Good! I thought it was just me!
Puzzle solved! I have never heard of him either – or the coat manufacturer!
This was great fun, Lizzie – thank you!
I have heard of Victor Joris, but had never heard of Cuddlecoat (which surprises me, given the quantity of coats in my inventory!). And would never in a zillion years known who he was by his photo….
Thanks for the fun, Lizzie–very interesting and lots of fun!
Found some interesting in formation online in newspaper and magazine archives. Apparently Cuddlecoat was one of the first design houses to create the maxi coat, and Victor Joris won a Coty. So he must have been fairly well known back in the day, at least among his contemporaries. Even though I don’t recall the Cuddlecoat name, I wouldn’t be surprised if I had one of their coats–I wore a lot of them in the 60s and into the early 70s.
