Stage, August 1936

At first you think “1936?” and then you notice that this is a special 1911 number.  The entire magazine has a disconnected feel, with some pages straight out of 1911 and others from 1936.

But no matter, as the star of the day is Miss Billie Burke, who in 1911 was a big Broadway star.  She married Florenz Ziegfeld three years later.  She starred in many movies during the 1920s and the 30s, and was portrayed by Myrna Loy in the 1936 film, The Great Ziegfeld.  Today she is remembered almost exclusively for one role – that of Glinda the Good Witch in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz.

Interestingly, she also had her name and likeness on a dress label, Sportswear by Billie Burke, in the 1930s.

  1. I have quite a big colletion of postcards of Miss Burke, she was incredibly beautiful. I always remember her in Dinner at Eight, do remember that look she gave Jean Harlow when she said she’d been reading a book?

    • That was a great role for her. I loved when she got the telegram from the single man who was going to miss her dinner because he had pneumonia, and her reaction: “Of all the thoughtless, selfish… On the night of my dinner!”
